Why Choose a Colorado Fall Wedding
When To Have Your Colorado Fall Wedding
How To Plan Your Colorado Fall Wedding
Things To Do in Colorado During Your Fall Wedding
Fall in Colorado, from mid-September through October, brings crisp mornings, warm afternoons, and cool nights—making it an ideal time for your outdoor wedding or elopement. High temperatures typically range from around 75°F in September to around 60°F in October, with average lows dipping into the 30s. At higher elevations, you can expect significantly cooler temperatures.
High in the mountains, snowfall arrives as early as September, while slightly lower elevations typically see their first snow in October—bringing the first hints of winter with the fading fall colors.
Important Consideration
After sunset, temperatures can take a sharp dive, especially in the mountains. Layer up with gloves, scarves, and hats to keep you and your loved ones comfortable during your celebration. Plan for extra warmth by bringing cozy throws or adding hand warmers for extra comfort.
No season transforms Colorado’s landscapes quite like fall. The color palette shifts to rich, warm tones as the aspens turn brilliant shades of gold and orange, creating contrast against the deep green evergreens and bright blue skies. The underbrush and low-lying vegetation also shift to deep reds and oranges, adding even more depth to the scenery. Meanwhile, the tallest mountain peaks have a light dusting of snow, making them look even more dramatic against the fall colors.
Locations like Golden Gate Canyon, Maroon Bells, and Boreas Pass are famous for their expansive aspen groves. Wildlife such as deer, elk, and moose are also more active during fall, offering plenty of opportunities for wildlife sightings—just remember to admire them from a safe distance and to respect their space. As the days grow shorter, the earlier sunsets also create a cozy, intimate atmosphere with dreamy, golden light for your ceremony and wedding portraits.
Important Consideration
Because Colorado’s fall scenery is so remarkable, popular public locations can get busy and you’ll likely be sharing space with other leaf peepers. For maximum privacy, I recommend reserving a private ceremony site, planning an early morning or weekday ceremony, or hiking to a hidden gem off the beaten path. Remember, if you need help choosing a location, I’m here to help you find the perfect one.

Catching the colorful aspen trees at their peak color can be a game of chance when planning your Colorado fall wedding. Color change in Colorado is notoriously unpredictable, thanks to our dry climate and the potential for an early snowfall to knock the vibrant leaves from the trees before they ever reach their peak. The transition from green to gold is gradual and varies from year to year, so there’s no guarantee that any specific week or location will align perfectly. That said, there are some general guidelines that can help you get an idea of the best time for your celebration.
The timing of peak color change in Colorado depends largely on the elevation, geography, and the year’s weather. In general, color change begins in high elevation locations (above 8,500 feet) in late September and early October, then gradually moves down to lower elevations and further south as the season progresses. In northern Colorado, peak foliage usually occurs by mid- to late-September, while areas around the Interstate-70 corridor—like Eagle and Summit counties—reach peak color by early October. The Roaring Fork Valley, home to Aspen, often sees peak color into the first week of October.
As you head further south, toward the San Juans, peak color arrives later, typically around the second or even third week of October. While the pattern is generally consistent, remember that timing varies from year to year, and the precise timing of peak foliage can be a bit unpredictable. Predictions mostly line up with what state forest experts believe, but remember: they are just that—predictions.
Colorado’s fall foliage is stunning, but its beauty does not stay around for very long. This is partly because of the state’s dry climate and rapid weather shifts. A few days of rain, a cold snap, or an early snowstorm can quickly cause the vibrant leaves to fall from their branches, bringing an end to the season’s colors.
Estimated Date Ranges
Above 8,500 feet (mountains): Mid-September to early October
Below 8,500 feet (lower elevations): Late September to early November
Northern Colorado (northwest): Mid-September to early October
Interstate-70 Corridor (Eagle, Summit counties): Late September to early October
Aspen and Roaring Fork Valley: Late September to the first week of October
San Juans (southern Colorado): Mid-October to late October
As with any outdoor wedding, be sure to keep an eye on long-term forecasts and stay flexible. Fall also brings earlier sunsets, meaning your ceremony may need to happen earlier in the day to capture your post-ceremony portraits in golden hour light.
If you’re planning a wedding at one of Colorado’s fall wedding venues, remember to consider the shorter days and cooler evenings when scheduling your ceremony and reception. Be prepared for potential weather changes and have a backup plan to ensure your guests stay comfortable while enjoying your beautiful celebration.

Colorado is home to an incredible variety of fall wedding venues, from scenic public lands and charming Airbnb retreats to dedicated intimate wedding venues. Many of these locations offer stunning mountain views and vibrant fall foliage, creating the perfect setting for your intimate wedding day. Below is a list of beautiful options, but we can always work together to find the perfect spot that matches your vision, budget, and dream experience.
Golden Gate Canyon State Park, just 45 minutes from Denver, is home to a classically rustic Colorado fall wedding venue—the Red Barn. Beyond the venue itself, the entire park provides an idyllic setting for your micro wedding or elopement photos. It’s not only a budget-friendly option but also incredibly accessible. Despite the park’s proximity to nearby towns, there’s a sense of privacy here, thanks to the lush fall foliage and prime canyon location.
This Colorado fall wedding venue comes alive during this season. The crisp autumn air and golden leaves create an unforgettable atmosphere for your intimate wedding or elopement. Unlike more well-known locations such as Rocky Mountain National Park or Garden of the Gods, Golden Gate Canyon offers a more private experience with countless beautiful spots for capturing your wedding portraits.
While weddings are limited to the Red Barn Group Picnic Area, you can still enjoy other scenic locations within the park for your first look or post-ceremony portraits. The Red Barn Group Picnic Area includes rental of two historic barns that have been thoughtfully renovated to include electrical outlets, lighting, and sheltered picnic tables, creating a charming, rustic setting for your fall wedding celebration. After your ceremony, consider heading to Panorama Point, where you can take wedding portraits among sweeping views of the Continental Divide and surrounded by golden aspens.
The Red Barn is available from May through October, daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and accommodates up to 100 seated guests with parking for 25 vehicles. Reservations are available through cpwshop.com and cost $150 for Monday through Friday bookings and $200 on weekends. To enter the park, you’ll pay an entrance fee of $10 per vehicle or $4 per individual. To take portraits within Golden Gate Canyon State Park, you’ll need a photography permit, applied for at least two weeks in advance, which I’m happy to obtain on your behalf.
Nearby, you’ll find several Airbnb/VRBO options—like this one here—that offer a private space for you or your loved ones to enjoy time together in the days surrounding your Colorado fall wedding.
Boreas Pass, located just 1.5 hours from Denver, is a hidden gem for your Colorado fall wedding. This picturesque dirt road runs from Breckenridge to Como, reaching an elevation of about 12,500 feet. While the pass is stunning year-round, with ample mountain views, it truly shines during fall when the aspen trees turn a brilliant yellow.
If you’re looking for a quiet, scenic location for your fall elopement or wedding photos, Boreas Pass is perfect. Plus, you won’t need a permit to have your special day photographed here, making the experience even more seamless. After your ceremony, you can head to nearby Breckenridge for plenty of options to celebrate and enjoy your special day. Check out my blog for more ideas on how to plan your Breckenridge wedding day.
Located along Fall River Road in Estes Park, Colorado, O’Connor Pavilion offers a secluded but accessible venue for your Colorado fall wedding or elopement. While it feels peaceful and private, it’s just a short drive from downtown Estes Park, where you’ll find lodging, dining, and entertainment options.
This venue blends the best of both worlds—an expansive open meadow with breathtaking mountain views and a covered pavilion for your reception. The pavilion allows you to enjoy the crisp fall air while offering shelter in case of weather surprises.
O’Connor Pavilion accommodates up to 140 guests with 14 picnic tables seating 10 guests each, and you’ll have your choice of two stunning ceremony locations: Aspen Meadow or Deer Mountain Meadow. Both provide incredible fall backdrops, with vibrant golden aspens making for an unforgettable ceremony.
The pavilion is equipped with vaulted restrooms and is wheelchair accessible, though some areas may have rough terrain. Electricity is available for your DJ or live music, but sound levels will need to be monitored to ensure compliance with venue guidelines. The venue is available seasonally from May 27th to September 30th, with rental fees starting at $3,000 for a full day (9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.).
In addition to the pavilion, your rental includes access to outdoor recreational amenities like horseshoe pits, volleyball courts, and plenty of space for your loved ones to relax. You can also bring your own vendors, including catering and entertainment, and alcohol is permitted, so you can personalize your celebration to your liking.
With its meadow ceremony spaces, covered reception area, and nearby natural spots for photos, O’Connor Pavilion offers a versatile, scenic location for your Colorado fall wedding or elopement.

No Colorado fall wedding venue guide would be complete without mentioning the breathtaking Maroon Bells, located in Aspen. About 3.5 hours from Denver, this iconic location is the nation’s most photographed mountain range, offering jaw-dropping views that make the trip well worth it for your intimate fall wedding or elopement.
Maroon Bells Amphitheater can accommodate up to 50 guests and is available for reservation up to a year in advance for $200. Given its popularity, it’s important to reserve early, as spots fill up quickly—especially during the fall months. Keep in mind that weekend reservations aren’t available during September and October.
Due to vehicle restrictions on Maroon Creek Road, only five vehicle passes are issued per wedding. These passes allow motorized access past the Maroon Bells Welcome Station. Other guests can take the Maroon Bells shuttle bus from Aspen Highlands Ski Area, which costs $16 per adult and $10 for seniors and children under 12. Shuttle reservations are essential, and pets are welcome on board. However, for easier logistics, I recommend renting a party bus or arranging other group transportation.
While receptions aren’t allowed at the amphitheater itself, the nearby East Maroon Portal Picnic site offers a lovely spot for your intimate post-ceremony celebration of up to 75 people. The picnic site, tucked along Maroon Creek, creates a peaceful setting for a relaxed reception. An alternative solution would be to host your post-ceremony celebration at a nearby Airbnb.
If you’re curious about what a micro wedding at Maroon Bells looks like, check out my blog about a dreamy wedding I had the privilege of photographing there!
Point Park lies about 2 hours from Denver along the shores of Colorado’s largest lake, Grand Lake. This Colorado venue is perfect for a fall intimate wedding or elopement, with its serene lakefront setting framed by tree-lined mountains. The tranquil waters reflect the surrounding peaks, creating a picturesque backdrop for your intimate ceremony.
Point Park’s iconic Pier extends over the lake, with Baldy Mountain towering in the distance—making it a popular choice for both wedding ceremonies and portraits. However, it’s important to note that the venue operates on a first-come, first-served basis, and there is no reservation system in place.
While Point Park is a beautiful spot year-round, fall brings an extra layer of magic with vibrant hues from the nearby aspen trees. It really is the perfect place if you’re looking for a quiet, natural venue for your Colorado fall wedding or elopement.

Before diving into the planning process, take some time to explore Colorado’s fall wedding venues to see which ones align with you and your partner’s vision. From stunning public lands and private estates to charming intimate wedding venues, Colorado offers a wide range of beautiful settings for your fall celebration.
Consider your wedding day priorities—whether it’s capturing breathtaking mountain and aspen views, finding a cozy spot with local charm, or ensuring accessibility for your guests. Think about whether you’d like the rustic simplicity of a public lands location—where the scenery takes center stage, but amenities may be limited—or if you’d prefer the convenience and modern amenities of a private wedding venue. Understanding your options will help you make an informed decision and find the perfect location for your fall wedding.
Shoulder season is that time of year when fall and winter overlap, bringing fickle conditions that vary by elevation and year. In Colorado, this can mean everything from bright, crisp days to sudden snowflakes, sometimes all in the same day! To stay comfortable, safe, and warm throughout your micro wedding or elopement day, it’s a good idea to pack essentials like crampons, fleece-lined leggings, and cozy accessories like hats, gloves, and scarves.
If you’re concerned about the cold, I’ve made sure to plan ahead. I’ve built a client care kit with everything you might need to stay warm and comfortable. I carry crampons for slippery terrain, nude fleece-lined leggings, a fur shawl, ear muffs, gloves, hand warmers, body warmers, and blankets to keep you cozy all day long. I also bring clear umbrellas to shield you and your partner from any unexpected rain or snow while capturing gorgeous moments. My goal is to ensure you stay stress-free and enjoy your Colorado fall wedding to the fullest.

Colorado’s fall foliage is a must-see, with aspen trees turning vibrant colors across the Rocky Mountains. Popular spots for leaf peeping include Kenosha Pass, Kebler Pass, and Independence Pass. If you want to catch the colors early, Northern Colorado’s Steamboat Springs is a great option. For the brightest aspen trees, head to Crested Butte or Maroon Bells.
If you find a spot that’s too crowded, don’t worry—just drive a little further and you’re likely to find another stunning location. Scenic drives like the Million Dollar Highway, Boreas Pass, and Guanella Pass offer some of the best views in the fall. Whether by car, hike, or gondola, Colorado’s fall foliage is a breathtaking experience!
Consider a helicopter tour to see Colorado’s fall scenery from a whole new perspective. Locations like Royal Gorge and Durango provide year-round flights, giving you a bird’s-eye view of canyons, rivers, and changing aspen groves. While tours are weather-dependent, they’re a truly epic option for adding something unforgettable to your wedding experience.
Riding through golden aspen groves on horseback is a great way to experience Colorado’s fall colors up close. The slow pace lets you take in the crisp air, vibrant foliage, and mountain views without rushing the experience. Several outfitters, including Rusty Spurr Ranch, Maroon Bells Stables, and A&A Stables, offer guided rides through the scenic landscape. Some outfitters even include extras like a campfire-cooked meal after the ride, making for a cozy and immersive fall adventure.
For a more rugged way to experience Colorado’s fall colors, a 4×4 or off-road vehicle can take you deep into the mountains, far beyond the usual scenic routes. With thousands of miles of OHV trails across the state, these routes offer incredible views and access to remote aspen groves that most visitors never see. Guided Jeep tours are available in many areas, or you can bring your own off-road vehicle—just make sure it’s registered with Colorado Parks & Wildlife beforehand and that you follow local OHV guidelines.
A scenic train ride is a relaxed way to take in Colorado’s fall colors without the effort of hiking or driving. The Georgetown Loop Railroad offers a glimpse of Guanella Pass’s golden aspens from open-air cars, while the Royal Gorge Route Railroad winds through one of the state’s most dramatic canyons, with sheer rock walls towering over 1,000 feet above the Arkansas River. These are just a few of the historic railways that give you a unique perspective on the landscape, making them a great option for a relaxed yet exciting addition to your Colorado fall wedding.
Sometimes the best post-wedding moments come from simple, relaxed activities. You could pack a picnic and find a stunning spot to enjoy your spread, or head back to an incredible Airbnb to enjoy its comfort and amenities. Whether you’re playing board games, putting together a puzzle, cooking a meal, or enjoying time on the back deck, there’s no shortage of cozy options. If your Airbnb has a fireplace or hot tub, enjoy unwinding under the stars together. Take in the beauty around you while slowing down and savoring the simple things—it’s a perfect way to celebrate your fall wedding getaway.
