This Colorado gem offers awe-inspiring views of the Front Range and a lush evergreen forest that looks fantastic year-round. Just a little over 40 minutes from Denver, it’s a convenient choice that helps you avoid the gamble of navigating I-70 during winter months. Thanks to the evergreens, this area stays vibrant no matter the season.
The beauty of Mt. Falcon truly shines during the golden hours of sunrise and sunset, perfect for warm, golden-hued photos. While a Jefferson County (JeffCo) permit is required for engagement photos or portraits here, you don’t need to stress—I’ve got that covered. I always carry this permit, so you won’t have to worry about a thing.

Golden Gate Canyon State Park, just a 45-minute drive from Denver, offers an idyllic setting for your portrait session or engagement photos. Its close proximity to the road makes it easily accessible, but don’t let that fool you—the beauty here is abundant. The aspen trees in this park are absolutely stunning, especially in the fall, when they burst into a brilliant display of golden hues.
While there are numerous options within the park for taking your portraits, Panorama Point stands out. It offers breathtaking views of the Continental Divide, making it an unforgettable backdrop for your photos. To capture your love here, you’ll need a commercial use permit from the park, as well as a daily vehicle pass for $10. Don’t worry though–I’ll happily obtain the permit on your behalf, so you can focus on enjoying your session.
Chautauqua Park is a portion of an iconic historic landmark that dates back to when the City of Boulder began preserving wild lands over 100 years ago. Just a short 45-minute drive from Denver, this little pocket of sunshine is a great spot for portraits.
Situated at the foot of Boulder’s famous Flatirons, the views here are stunning, especially around golden hour. This is also a great spot to catch some wildflowers if you visit from May through early August. Additionally, you won’t have to worry about obtaining the necessary permit for your session here because I always carry the required Boulder OSMP permit, making capturing your love against this picturesque backdrop hassle-free.
Lost Gulch, located just outside of Boulder, is a beloved spot and a top choice for Colorado engagement photos and couples portraits. The vistas at Lost Gulch are simply breathtaking, offering sweeping mountain views that will leave you and your partner in awe. The westward-facing overlook treats you to panoramic views of the Indian Peaks Wilderness and the mountain tops of Rocky Mountain National Park.
While this location is stunning year-round, I highly recommend planning your session between June and October for the most favorable weather. Special caution is required during the winter months, as the trails and rocks can get slippery and chain laws go into effect on Flagstaff Mountain.
To have your portraits taken here, you’ll need a Boulder OSMP permit. Don’t worry, though—I always carry this permit, so you won’t have to deal with any of the logistics.
At over 11,900 feet in elevation, Loveland Pass is one of the highest continuously open mountain pass roads in the country, closing only intermittently for snow plowing. Located about 1 hour and 15 minutes from Denver, this stunning location offers incredible mountain-top views, making it an unforgettable spot for your Colorado engagement photos.
This high-elevation location is a perfect escape from the city heat in late summer and remains equally stunning through fall, when you may even catch a few early snowflakes. Keep in mind that Loveland Pass can surprise you with snow from October through June, so it’s essential to stay updated on weather conditions, as winter weather may cause temporary closures until the roads are cleared.
Loveland Pass is also home to Pass Lake, and Dillon Reservoir is just 20 minutes down the road, providing even more scenic options for portraits. Whether you’re looking for epic mountain vistas or a tranquil alpine setting, Loveland Pass offers a truly impressive backdrop for your engagement photos.

Located just 1 hour and 15 minutes from Denver, North Cheyenne Cañon Park sits on the southwest side of Colorado Springs. Spanning over 1,600 acres and carved 1,000 feet deep into 1.5 billion-year-old granite rock, this stunning location is perfect for engagement photos or couples portraits. The park is home to diverse wildlife, including black bears, mountain lions, and mule deer, as well as numerous birds like the Kingfisher, American Dipper, and Broad-tailed Hummingbird. Adding to the serene beauty, North Cheyenne Creek feeds multiple waterfalls that wind through the canyon.
Since no permit is required for your portrait session here, you’re free to explore all 1,000+ acres and find a scenic spot that feels just right for you and your partner. Whether you choose a picturesque location along the road or hike to a more secluded gem, there’s no shortage of breathtaking backdrops to capture this exciting chapter in your relationship.
The park’s proximity to local hot spots like Garden of the Gods, The Broadmoor, and Manitou Springs makes it ideal for combining nature with nearby dining and other fun date night activities.
If you’re looking to add some adventure to your engagement session, the park offers over 50 trails for hiking or mountain biking, plus opportunities for rock climbing and bouldering. If you are up for a bit of a challenge, hike the 1.9-mile out-and-back trail to the summit of Mt. Cutler. At the top, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic mountain views—an especially perfect spot if you’re planning your surprise proposal.
There’s a paved road through the main entrance, but, for some extra fun, take Gold Camp Road on the way down. This dirt road winds through the other side of the park, offering sweeping mountain views and even passing through old mining tunnels. It’s a unique experience that can add some extra memories to your day.
Located between Keystone and Breckenridge, Sapphire Point Overlook combines panoramic views with easy access. Just a 15-minute drive from downtown Breckenridge and 1.5 hours from Denver, this engagement session location sits at an elevation of 9,500 feet. The overlook offers sweeping views of the Gore and Tenmile mountains, along with the tranquil Lake Dillon below.
The convenience of Sapphire Point Overlook, coupled with its ADA accessibility, makes it a popular spot for couples seeking both beauty and ease. This location is very popular and hiking trails run nearby, so you can’t guarantee having this gem all to yourself. If you’re planning your session during a popular time of year, I recommend securing a reservation to ensure the overlook is not occupied by another event.
Please note that if you’re considering Sapphire Point for your Colorado engagement photos, it will be closed for maintenance from mid-May to June 2, 2025, and again from July 30 to October 2025. If the date of your session falls within the latter window, you’ll need to contact the Dillon Ranger District for further information.
Boreas Pass is a dirt road that runs from Breckenridge to Como, just an hour and a half drive from Denver. This picturesque location reaches an elevation of approximately 12,500 feet, offering breathtaking views of the Colorado Rockies.
Boreas Pass is beautiful from June to October, but it truly shines during the fall when the aspens that line the road turn a vibrant gold, complementing the mountain vistas. No permit is required for engagement photos or portrait sessions, making it a simple choice for a spectacular backdrop.
Rocky Mountain National Park is one of the most sought-after destinations in the entire national park system—and for good reason. It’s easy to see why this park is so popular with its countless mountain peaks, 147 lakes, and over 300 miles of trails.
Rocky Mountain National Park offers expansive mountain views, serene forests, and picturesque alpine lakes that provide the perfect backdrop for your engagement photos or portrait session. Located just 1.5 hours from Denver, it’s a convenient escape from the city’s hustle and bustle. Plus, you might even spot some of Colorado’s fascinating wildlife during your engagement session!
The best part? You don’t need a permit for engagement photos here, but a timed entry reservation is required during peak months. It’s important to be aware of potential road closures during winter and, remember, all vehicles must pay the park’s $30 entrance fee.
For the best experience, consider planning your Colorado engagement photos during the spring or fall seasons. While summer showcases undeniable beauty, it can also bring heavy crowds.
No matter when you choose to visit, Rocky Mountain National Park offers an iconic, breathtaking setting for unforgettable engagement photos.
Mayflower Gulch lies about 1.5 hours from Denver near Copper Mountain and Breckenridge. This Colorado location offers increased privacy due to its 3-mile round trip hike, and access to the trailhead is easy with convenient parking. But what sets Mayflower Gulch apart isn’t just its accessibility; it’s the fact that you get phenomenal views, a quaint mining ghost town, and a stunning tree-lined hike.
As you hike along the Mayflower Gulch Trail, the landscape unfolds, revealing a shockingly gorgeous basin. The expansive gulch offers panoramic views of the surrounding ridge line—a perfect backdrop for your engagement photos or portrait session.
I had so much fun capturing Jamiee + Adam’s snowy engagement photos here. To see their Colorado engagement photos and get inspired for your own session, you can check out the blog linked below.
Pikes Peak, famously known for its “purple mountain majesty,” is the Colorado landmark that inspired the iconic poem and song “America the Beautiful.” Located just over an hour from Denver in Colorado Springs, this 14,000-foot peak offers sweeping views of the Front Range and beyond. Whether you’re driving to the summit, taking a shuttle, or riding the cog railway, the 19-mile scenic route is filled with stunning vistas at every turn—perfect for capturing your Colorado engagement photos or couples portrait session.
However, due to the high elevation and steep ledges, it’s important to drive carefully if taking your own vehicle. While the road is paved and well-maintained, sudden weather changes can cause closures. Stay updated on road conditions by calling (719) 385-7325 before heading up, as parts of the road may close during storms.
Pikes Peak is surrounded by convenient amenities in Colorado Springs and Woodland Park, including world-class hotels, restaurants, and Airbnbs. It’s also close to other local scenic attractions like North Cheyenne Cañon Park, Garden of the Gods, Old Colorado City, and Manitou Springs, making it easy to turn your photo session into a full day of adventure or a night on the town.
To make the most of your experience and avoid crowds or afternoon storms, it’s best to head up early in the day. Weather at higher elevations can change quickly, so be prepared for anything as you capture lifelong memories at this incredible mountain setting.
St. Mary’s Glacier, a popular hiking destination near Idaho Springs, is just under an hour’s drive from Denver. This stunning engagement photo location sits at an elevation of 11,000 feet and offers breathtaking views of an alpine lake, mountain ridgeline, evergreen forests, and the “glacier” itself.
The 1.6-mile out-and-back hike to the lake is moderately challenging, rewarding you with incredible scenery along the way. For those looking to capture the area’s beauty in soft, early light, sunrise at St. Mary’s Glacier is especially magical, with the possibility of orange alpenglow on the surrounding mountains. Early morning visits also provide a quieter, more private experience—ideal for an intimate photo session. Though parking fees apply, no permit is required to take your engagement photos here.
Pass Lake lies along Loveland Pass, about 1 hour and 15 minutes from Denver. This tranquil, alpine lake sits at an elevation of over 11,500 feet, offering dramatic views of the towering nearby mountain peaks. Pass Lake combines a sense of seclusion with easy accessibility—minimal hiking is required.
As with Loveland Pass, Pass Lake can experience snow anytime from October through June. For a chance to witness Colorado’s gorgeous snowfall, I recommend choosing a mid-October date. On the other hand, if you prefer to avoid snow, late summer is perfect for enjoying vibrant wildflowers at this stunning location.
Pass Lake is also close to Breckenridge and Georgetown, allowing you to extend your day with a delicious meal at one of the local restaurants or breweries. Whether it’s your engagement photos, your proposal, or both, Pass Lake offers an unforgettable experience without the need for a permit.
Dillon Reservoir, also known as Lake Dillon, is a stunning mountain lake conveniently located between Dillon and Frisco, with Silverthorne just below the dam. It’s a short drive from Breckenridge and approximately 1.25 hours from Denver, making it a versatile choice for your engagement photos. Dillon Reservoir is also just a short distance from Loveland Pass and Pass Lake, allowing you to easily visit multiple scenic locations in one day.
With 26 miles of shoreline surrounded by breathtaking mountain vistas, Dillon Reservoir offers a picturesque and easily accessible backdrop for your engagement photos or portraits.
Although high water levels render the shoreline inaccessible during spring and early summer, the lake is a beautiful location for your engagement photos throughout the rest of the year. In late summer, you’re greeted by the lake’s blue waters and forest-covered shoreline. Meanwhile, in fall, you’re treated to a mix of golden aspens along the shores. Finally, in winter, the lake freezes over creating a glittering minimalist landscape.
You don’t need a permit to photograph your engagement session or portraits at Dillon Reservoir, making it easy to plan your couples portraits.
Manitou Lake Recreation Area is a little over 1.5 hours from Denver and offers a stunning setting for your Colorado engagement or couples photo session. This peaceful 5-acre reservoir boasts views of nearby Pikes Peak, making it perfect for photos along the scenic trail around the lake.
While motorboats and swimming aren’t allowed, you can enjoy paddleboarding, canoeing, or kayaking. Year-round fishing is also available in the reservoir and nearby Trout Creek, if you and your partner enjoy tossing some lines.
Plus, there are plenty of camping opportunities nearby—whether you prefer dispersed camping, campgrounds, or even cozy cabins. This makes it easy to turn your couples photo session into a full weekend engagement celebration. Picture starting the day with lakeside photos, enjoying a picnic, and ending the night stargazing by a campfire, all within a short drive.
Whether you’re paddling across the water, sharing quiet moments on the shoreline, or exploring the nearby trails, Manitou Lake Recreation Area is a relaxed, scenic spot to capture your engaged era.
Great Sand Dunes National Park is one of Colorado’s most dynamic and awe-inspiring locations for engagement photos and portrait sessions. Home to the tallest sand dune in North America and set against the stunning backdrop of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, this “desert” location feels like a dreamscape. It’s hard to believe such an extraordinary place exists only 3.5 hours from Denver.
While you can expect a bit of wind year-round here, the prime time to visit is from June through October when warm temperatures mitigate the wind’s impacts. If you’re up for a nighttime adventure, the park is also a designated Dark Sky Location, offering the opportunity to take unique portraits under the stars.
Just a short drive from Colorado Springs and a little over 1.5 hours from Denver, the Paint Mines Interpretive Park is a hidden gem that offers a truly unique setting for your Colorado engagement or couples portrait session. This mesmerizing landscape, known for its layers of pink, white, yellow, and orange rock, can be best described as otherworldly.
The Paint Mines hold a rich history, with human presence in the area dating back over 9,000 years. The park is named for the vibrant clay that Native Americans once collected to make paint. The colors result from oxidized iron layered throughout the rocks, while the park’s fascinating geological formations, like spires and hoodoos, are carved by natural erosion.
Although you’ll need a permit for your portrait session, the Paint Mines provide an unforgettable setting for your engagement photos, offering not just the striking rock formations but also wide-open fields with tall grasses and blooming wildflowers. For the best experience, plan your session between March and October to avoid the cold winds.
Golden hour provides the most glowing light, but, as a designated Dark Sky Location, night brings its own magic. Although the park typically closes after dark, a special permit is available if you’d like to capture portraits under the stars. As always, I’ll assist you in obtaining the necessary permits for your session here.
Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre, famous for its legendary music venue, is also one of the most stunning locations for engagement photos and portrait sessions in Colorado. Located in Morrison, just 20 minutes from downtown Denver, this spot showcases dramatic red rock formations and sweeping views of the foothills that create a one-of-a-kind natural backdrop.
This location is absolutely stunning year-round. However, for the most ideal weather conditions, I recommend visiting between June and October. My favorite time is early-to-mid summer when the wildflowers are in full bloom.
If your engagement session involves fewer than 5 people, you will not need a permit, making it even more convenient to capture your love amidst this iconic natural wonder.
Garden of the Gods is the most photographed spot in all of Colorado Springs and is a highly popular location for engagement photos and couples portraits. Its exceptional appeal lies in its blend of unique natural beauty and proximity to downtown Colorado Springs.
Whether you crave fiery red rock formations or mountain views, Garden of the Gods has it all. Plus, the park is just minutes away from other fantastic engagement photo locations, like North Cheyenne Cañon, offering even more options for your session.
Although no permit is required to take your engagement photos at Garden of the Gods, keep in mind that it can get quite busy, especially during the summer months. To beat the crowds, I always recommend planning a weekday or sunrise session. This location’s beauty is accessible year round, with summer offering vibrant greenery and winter showcasing the contrast of the rock formations against the white snow.
The Byron White Courthouse is one of my favorite urban locations for engagement photos and portrait sessions. Built in 1916, this architectural gem showcases an impressive neo-classical design right in the heart of downtown Denver. Its grandeur is unmatched, with sixteen towering, three-story marble columns that have earned it the nickname, “a poem in marble.” Fun fact: the same marble used to construct this courthouse was also used for the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the iconic Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.
No matter the time of year, this location offers a sleek, timeless setting that feels straight out of a romantic movie. Luckily, there is no cost for the required permit to capture your engagement photos and portraits here, and I am happy to obtain the permit on your behalf. That means we can focus on capturing beautiful memories against this historic and breathtaking backdrop without extra cost or hassle.
The Denver Botanic Gardens is a floral wonderland right in the heart of Denver, offering an enchanting backdrop for your engagement photos or portrait session. With its diverse and vibrant blooms, every corner feels like a living work of art, bursting with color and texture.
From April to October, the blooms are at their peak, turning the gardens into a fairytale-like setting where nature’s beauty truly shines. It’s the perfect place to capture moments that feel both timeless and magical.
For your portrait session, you and your partner are required to pay the $15.75 admission fee to the gardens. However, the expense is well worth it, and I highly recommend staying after your session to explore the gardens further!
A permit is required for photos here, but don’t worry—I can obtain the permit on your behalf, so that you can focus on enjoying the experience and creating beautiful memories in this botanical oasis.
Cheesman Park is a vibrant urban oasis located just east of the Capitol Hill neighborhood in the heart of Denver. Spanning a generous 80 acres, the park offers the perfect mix of open green space and classic architecture, making it a fantastic spot for your engagement photos or portrait session. At the center of it all is the Cheesman Memorial, a stunning Greek-style pavilion built in 1910, featuring elegant white marble columns that add a timeless touch to your photos.
Cheesman Park truly comes alive in the summer when lush greenery and towering trees create a fresh, inviting atmosphere. Between the stately pavilion and the surrounding natural beauty, you’ll have no shortage of gorgeous backdrops to choose from. Even better—if your portrait session involves fewer than five people, you won’t need a permit, making it even easier to enjoy this scenic gem.
Now, here’s an idea that often doesn’t get the attention it deserves when it comes to Colorado engagement photos and portrait sessions: capturing your moments in the cozy embrace of your own home or a charming Airbnb. I absolutely love this option because the possibilities are endless, and it brings a whole new level of intimacy to your photos.
What makes an Airbnb session so special is that you get to handpick a setting that perfectly compliments the vibe and scenery you envision. Whether it’s a rustic cabin in the mountains, a chic city loft, or a cozy cottage, you can choose a space that adds personality and character to your couples photo session.
On the other hand, choosing to take your portraits at home allows you to offer a glimpse into your most intimate, everyday life. Being in the comfort of your personal space also helps you relax and be more at ease, creating a naturally authentic atmosphere for your portraits. It’s a special way to document your love story in a setting that’s uniquely yours.
Plus you can even plan a cozy, fun activity during your session! Whether it’s playing board games, cooking breakfast together, or simply enjoying a quiet moment by the fireplace, the options are endless. Your engagement photos will capture the warmth and joy of those moments, creating memories that feel truly personal and special.
Embarking on a portrait session might feel a little intimidating at first, especially if you’re new to having your photo taken. But don’t worry—I’m here to make the entire process smooth and stress-free. From scouting the perfect location to handling the logistics, including permits, I’ve got you covered.
“But what if we’re awkward?” I’ve got you, friend. Couples just like you share this fear all the time, but that doesn’t make it any more true. How your photos look has nothing to do with your appearance or experience in front of the camera. It has everything to do with being yourself.
After all, love looks good on you. For the best photos, simply show up as your truest self and never be afraid to wear your heart on your sleeve.
And, fear not, I’ll guide you through posing, showing you how to bring those authentic moments to life. Whether it’s running, dancing, or whispering silly secrets, we’ll do whatever it takes to capture genuine interactions and real laughter.
When it comes to the age-old question of “What should I wear for my engagement shoot?“, I’ve got some friendly advice. While neutral colors are always a safe bet, I take it a step further by providing each of my couples with a style guide. This guide is designed to help you confidently choose outfits that make you look and feel your best during your session.
For even more tips on colors, combinations, and styling, be sure to check out my blog, which dives deeper into this topic and helps you feel confident in your choices.
There are numerous benefits to taking couples portraits. Not only is it a wonderful way to document your love story, but it also provides an opportunity to experience how your (potential) wedding photographer works. It’s a two-way street: you’ll get to know each other better, and your photographer will learn the best way to guide you for your wedding day.
Engagement photos are also the perfect opportunity to schedule your hair and makeup trials. By combining them with your engagement session, you’ll be able to experiment and see how your look will translate into your wedding gallery.
Believe it or not, I often hear couples say, “I didn’t expect to have so much fun!” after their portrait session. But, truth be told, I always knew you would. I come prepared with props, prompts, games, and a bit of comedic relief to help you feel at ease in front of the camera. You bring your real and raw emotions, resulting in a gallery full of memories you’ll cherish for a lifetime.
