Choosing the right location for your wedding proposal is a key part of making this special moment unforgettable. Planning your proposal is like crafting the perfect movie scene: you want everything to align just right. The scenery sets the backdrop, the date and time create the ideal lighting, and the presence of loved ones or the intimacy of sharing a private moment adds to the magic. Every detail, from what you’ll say to how you’ll celebrate afterward, contributes to the experience and memories you’ll cherish forever.
In Colorado, the stunning landscape offers endless possibilities for a picture-perfect proposal. From majestic mountains and serene lakes to lush forests and vibrant deserts, each location provides an epic backdrop for your Colorado proposal. As you plan, think about what will make your proposal personal, authentic, and meaningful to your partner. Whether you dream of a grand gesture surrounded by nature or a quiet, intimate setting, finding the perfect Colorado proposal location will help you create a proposal story that’s uniquely yours.
How to Propose + Planning Your Proposal
Planning the perfect proposal requires attention to detail and a touch of creativity. It’s a big moment, marking the start of an exciting new chapter in your life. While the prospect of proposing can feel daunting, it doesn’t have to be stressful—on the contrary, it should be a time filled with joy, anticipation, and excitement.
I understand your desire to make this moment memorable for your partner. As you get planning, here are some tips for how to propose:
Hiring a photographer for your proposal is a brilliant decision for many reasons. Wedding proposals typically happen fast and with so many emotions, that the moment can go by in a blur. A proposal photographer not only captures your raw emotions as they unfold but also assists in orchestrating the perfect plan for your big moment. When you book with me, I help with everything from the beginning. Whether you need help finding the perfect location or planning a memorable activity, I’m here to help you craft a moment that matches your grandest vision.
Beyond taking photos, your photographer can play a crucial role as your behind-the-scenes director, helping with lighting, timing, and even setting the mood with music if needed—details that make your proposal authentic and unforgettable. Most importantly, photographers capture your genuine, unfiltered emotions—the surprise, joy, and love that define that fleeting moment. Having real-time photos from your proposal also allows you to effortlessly share your story with others, capturing what words alone can’t convey.
Hiring a photographer for your proposal also presents a wonderful opportunity for beautiful engagement photos. It’s like a 2-for-1 special, ensuring you not only have stunning images from your proposal but also enter your engaged era with some memorable photos.
Your proposal photographer plays a pivotal role in creating memories that you can relive forever, and I’d be honored to be the one to capture this once-in-a-lifetime moment for you.
Incorporate elements that reflect your relationship and shared interests, considering specific ideas your partner has maybe mentioned in passing. Have they talked about a certain vision for their proposal? Perhaps a certain setting or specific post-proposal plans?
This is your chance to include those details. That could mean asking your photographer to bring a portable speaker to play a favorite song in the background, recreating a special memory, or creating an experience you’ve always wanted to share together. These personal and meaningful touches make your marriage proposal uniquely yours and show how well you know and cherish your partner’s desires.
When planning your proposal, think about the time of day and season that best suits your partner’s preferences. Does your partner enjoy the quiet serenity of glittering snow, the vibrant hues of fall foliage, or the blooming wildflowers of summer?
Once you’ve chosen the season, consider the time of day. Sunrise and sunset provide stunning golden hour light that ups the romance and photographs beautifully. Also, think about your post-proposal plans. Are you imagining a full day of activities or a celebratory night out? These considerations can help you decide on the best time of day to pop the question.
As a proposal photographer, I regularly help my couples navigate these tricky decisions for a memorable proposal experience. By planning ahead, you can ensure that your proposal is not only beautifully timed but also seamlessly transitions into the next memorable moments of your engagement.
Respecting the environment is a crucial consideration when planning your proposal. While adding personal touches to your chosen location can be meaningful, it’s important to be mindful of the area’s natural ecosystem.
Avoid introducing non-native species of plants or leaving litter, such as confetti, that could harm the environment. Instead, focus on enhancing the setting in ways that complement its natural features and preserve its integrity. This ensures that your marriage proposal respects and protects the environment for future enjoyment.
Planning the details of your proposal might include preparing a speech and considering details like which knee you’ll kneel on, if doing so. It can also mean knowing which pocket the ring will be in for easy and secure access.
Collaborating with your photographer is essential too; they can help plan by knowing where to discreetly position themselves. Whether blending into the nearest bush or posing as a casual birdwatcher, discussing this ensures your photographer captures your proposal from the perfect angle. While the moment itself is the true highlight, a well-thought-out plan can alleviate nerves and show your partner the effort you’ve put into making this occasion memorable.
Nerves are natural, especially when you’ve invested so much effort into planning your proposal. However, it’s crucial to remain calm and fully embrace the moment. Your partner will appreciate seeing and sharing in your genuine emotions. Remember, you’ve meticulously planned every detail, ensuring you’re well-prepared to create the best possible experience.
Being mindfully present allows you to immerse yourself fully in this special occasion, making it memorable for both of you. Trust that everything is in good hands and be yourself—your authenticity will make this moment truly unforgettable.
Selecting the right location for your proposal is key to setting the tone and ensuring your partner feels comfortable. Consider what setting your partner would appreciate. If seclusion is preferred, opt for a location that isn’t heavily trafficked, requires a longer hike, or a spot you can reserve for increased privacy. Similarly, if your partner prefers leisurely walks over adventurous hikes, consider a location that accommodates their preferences.
Think about places that hold special meaning to your relationship—perhaps the spot where you had your first date, a favorite hiking trail, or even a destination you’ve both dreamed of visiting together. Here in Colorado, you’re spoiled for choice with dynamic and unique settings that cater to every taste. From a secluded mountain overlook, a lakeside Airbnb, or a vibrant botanical garden, Colorado offers an array of stunning locations for a memorable proposal.
Whether you choose a special spot that’s meaningful to both of you or a place you’ve always wanted to explore together, now’s the perfect time to turn that dream into reality. Planning a post-proposal celebration can turn a single moment into a full-day experience, keeping the excitement alive and deepening the emotional impact. Continuing your celebration with special activities allows you to bask in the joy and excitement of your engagement. It gives you both a chance to connect, reflect, and create additional lasting memories from this significant day. This thoughtfulness can make your partner feel cherished and show how much you value this milestone in your relationship.

Boreas Pass is situated just a scenic two-hour drive from Denver between Breckenridge and Como. At an elevation of approximately 12,500 feet, this picturesque dirt road boasts panoramic views of the Colorado Rockies.
While Boreas Pass is stunning year-round, it is especially magical during the fall months. The aspen trees that line the road turn a brilliant golden hue, creating a breathtaking backdrop that complements the majestic Colorado mountain vistas. This combination of golden foliage and dramatic landscapes makes Boreas Pass an ideal location for popping the question.
What’s even better, you won’t need a permit to have your proposal photographed here, making it a seamless choice for capturing this special moment against one of Colorado’s most scenic backdrops.
Mayflower Gulch lies about 1.5 hours from Denver near Copper Mountain and Breckenridge. This location offers increased privacy due to its 3-mile round trip hike, and access to the trailhead is easy with convenient parking.
What sets Mayflower Gulch apart is its stunning features, including a quaint ghost town and picturesque tree-lined tails. As you hike along the Mayflower Gulch Trail, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of the expansive basin and the surrounding ridge line—also a perfect backdrop for capturing your post-proposal engagement photos.
Chautauqua Park is a portion of an iconic historic landmark that dates back to when the City of Boulder began preserving wild lands over 100 years ago. Just a short 45-minute drive from Denver, this little pocket of sunshine is a great spot for your proposal.
Sitting at the foot of Boulder’s famed Flatirons, the views here are absolutely stunning, especially around golden hour. This is also a great spot to view some wildflowers if you visit from May through early August. Also, you won’t have to worry about obtaining a permit for your proposal photography since I always carry the required Boulder OSMP permit. Sapphire Point Overlook, located between Keystone and Breckenridge, is just under 1.5 hours from Denver and serves as an ideal Colorado proposal location. This remarkable spot offers incredible views of the Gore and Tenmile mountains, with serene Lake Dillon below. And, sitting at an elevation of 9,500 feet, it showcases its beauty no matter what season you pop the question.
One of the reasons Sapphire Point is so popular for proposals and engagement photos alike is its combination of stunning mountain vistas and accessibility– being ADA-accessible. Due to its popularity, securing privacy without a reservation can be challenging. However, while no permit is required, reserving the overlook ensures increased privacy for your special moment. This option is particularly beneficial for planning your proposal!
Lost Gulch, located just outside Boulder and a short one-hour drive from Denver, is an excellent choice for your Colorado proposal. The vistas at Lost Gulch are simply breathtaking, offering sweeping mountain views that will undoubtedly leave your partner in awe. The westward-facing overlook provides panoramic views of the Indian Peaks Wilderness and the mountain peaks of Rocky Mountain National Park.
While Lost Gulch is stunning year-round, the period between June and October typically offers the most favorable weather for a proposal. It’s important to note that winter months can bring slippery trails and cause chain laws to go into effect on Flagstaff Mountain. To photograph your proposal here, you’ll need a Boulder OSMP permit, which I always carry to ensure a smooth experience.
Rocky Mountain National Park stands as one of the most coveted destinations within the entire national park system, and for good reason.

Just 1.5 hours from Denver, it offers a convenient escape from urban life. You might even have the chance to encounter Colorado’s fascinating wildlife during your proposal!

The aspen trees here are nothing short of phenomenal, particularly in the fall, when they burst into a brilliant display of golden hues. If your proposal plans align with the fall season, it’s a perfect time to capture this stunning natural backdrop.
While there are numerous idyllic proposal locations within the park, Panorama Point stands out for its breathtaking views of the Continental Divide. To capture your proposal against this stunning backdrop, you’ll need a specific permit from the park. Don’t worry—I’ll handle all the logistics so you can focus on this big moment without any worries.
Mount Falcon is a Colorado gem that offers awe-inspiring views of the Front Range and a lush evergreen forest, making it an ideal choice for your Colorado proposal. Just a little over 40 minutes away from Denver, it’s a convenient option that avoids the gamble of navigating I-70 during the winter months. Thanks to the abundant evergreen trees, this area remains lush throughout the year.
The beauty of Mount Falcon truly shines during the golden hours of sunrise and sunset, perfect for enchantingly warm-hued proposal photos. While you’ll need a Jefferson County (JeffCo) permit to have your portraits or engagement session here, don’t worry—I’ve got you covered. I always carry this permit, so you won’t have to worry about a thing.
Loveland Pass, home to Pass Lake, stands as one of the highest mountain pass roads in the country. This easily accessible location remains open year-round, with winter roads regularly cleared for access. For mountain enthusiasts, this spot offers breathtaking mountain-top views and a serene alpine lake setting, all at over 11,500 feet in elevation.
Snow blankets the area for much of the year, creating a winter wonderland perfect for late summer escapes or capturing Colorado’s magical snowfall during the fall and early winter months. Conveniently located just over an hour from Denver and close to towns like Breckenridge and Georgetown, you can celebrate your proposal with a delightful meal at one of these mountain town’s breweries or restaurants. Whether it’s a proposal, engagement photos, or both, Loveland Pass + Pass Lake promises an unforgettable experience without the need for a permit.
Dillon Reservoir, also known as Lake Dillon, is a scenic mountain lake that sits between Dillon and Frisco, with Silverthorne just below the dam. Located a short drive from Breckenridge and approximately 1.25 hours from Denver, it offers a versatile and stunning setting to propose in Colorado.
With 26 miles of shoreline surrounded by stunning mountain vistas, Dillon Reservoir provides a picturesque and easily accessible backdrop for your engagement photos or portrait session. If you’re aiming to capture the golden aspens during the fall, you’ll be treated to breathtaking foliage alongside the alpine lake.
Summer and fall typically offer mild temperatures at this location, while winter transforms the lake into a glittering frozen expanse. Fortunately, you won’t need a permit to have your proposal photographed at Dillon Reservoir.

This picturesque location offers stunning views of an alpine lake and the surrounding lush evergreen forest. Great Sand Dunes National Park is an extraordinarily dynamic and awe-inspiring proposal location. Home to the tallest sand dune in North America, and set against the backdrop of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, it’s a place that feels completely ‘otherworldly.’ Despite its unique landscape, this location is surprisingly only 3.5 hours from Denver.
The best time to propose here is from June to October when warmer temperatures mitigate the oftentimes windy conditions. As a designated Dark Sky Location, it offers a unique opportunity for stunning night portraits as well.
Denver Botanic Gardens, right in the heart of Denver, offers a plethora of whimsical backdrops for your proposal. Its diverse and vibrant gardens transform into a living gallery of colors and textures, especially from April to October when the blooms are at their peak.
While this fun and colorful location requires a permit for photographing your proposal, rest assured—I’ll handle the logistics to ensure everything runs smoothly. All you need to do is focus on creating a memorable moment as you enter your engaged era together.
The Byron White Courthouse is one of my favorite urban spots for proposals and engagement photos. Built in 1916, and full of history, it was constructed with stunning neo-classical design that adds a touch of history to downtown Denver. Its sixteen majestic, three-story marble columns have bestowed it the nickname “a poem in marble.” What makes this building even more special is that it uses the same marble as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.
Year-round, this location exudes timeless elegance, like something out of a romantic movie. The best part? The required permit to photograph your proposal here is completely free. This means we can focus solely on your big moment in this historic and magnificent Colorado proposal location without any logistical hassles.
Cheesman Park, conveniently located east of Capitol Hill in the heart of Denver, spans a generous 80 acres, making it an ideal choice for your proposal and engagement photos. A prominent feature of the park is the Cheesman Memorial, a Greek-style pavilion with stunning white columns, erected in 1910.
During the vibrant summer months, Cheesman Park bursts to life with lush greenery and a variety of tree species. Whether you prefer a serene grassy lawn or the backdrop of the stately marble memorial, this park offers numerous picturesque settings for your Colorado proposal. And here’s a convenient perk: if your proposal plans involve fewer than 5 people, no permit is needed.
Garden of the Gods is undoubtedly the most photographed location in all of Colorado Springs. Just 1.25 hours from Denver, it’s a dream location for proposing to your special someone, thanks to its fiery red rock formations and views of Pikes Peak and the Front Range.
Here, you can nestle among vibrant rock formations or enjoy sweeping views of snow-capped mountains. The best part? No permit is needed to photograph your proposal here. Because the location can get busy, especially during summer, I recommend planning your proposal at sunrise or on a weekday for a more intimate experience.
Garden of the Gods is stunning year-round, with vibrant red rocks contrasting beautifully against snow during winter, and lush greenery during summer.
Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre, renowned for its iconic music venue in Morrison, Colorado, is an unforgettable proposal location. Featuring towering red rock formations and views of the foothills, it provides a unique backdrop to pop the question.
Just a short 20-minute drive from Denver, this location shines year-round and is easily accessible. For the best weather conditions, I recommend visiting from early summer to fall. Summer, in particular, is dotted with vibrant wildflowers that add a burst of color to your proposal photos.
If your proposal plans or post-proposal engagement shoot involves fewer than 5 people, no permit is required.
Now, here’s an idea that often doesn’t get the attention it deserves when it comes to planning a secluded and private proposal. I absolutely love capturing your moments in the cozy embrace of your own home or a charming Airbnb. The possibilities are endless when you choose to ask your partner to marry you in an Airbnb or your home. You can set up a decorated area while your partner is distracted– whether that be hanging twinkle lights, displaying photos from past adventures, or even sprinkling rose petals!
The beauty of proposing at an Airbnb lies in your ability to handpick a setting that complements the vibe and scenery your partner desires. Alternatively, when you pop the question in home, it’s like offering a glimpse into your most intimate, everyday life. In the comfort of your personal space, you and your partner are naturally at ease, creating a unique and authentic atmosphere for starting this exciting new chapter. It’s an idea that truly deserves consideration for anyone looking for a unique and private place to propose.
Plus, you can plan a cozy, fun activity for your post-proposal celebration! Whether you want to play board games, soak in a hot tub, or hire a private chef, the options are endless.
Crafting your ideal Colorado proposal is about more than just selecting a picturesque location—it’s a deeply personal journey that reflects your unique relationship and shared aspirations for the future. From choosing the right timing to planning meaningful details and a memorable celebration, every step should resonate with your desires and the story of your relationship.
Remember, there’s no universal formula for the perfect proposal; it’s about creating a heartfelt experience that captures the essence of your love and marks the beginning of a new chapter together. Take cues from your partner’s wishes, trust your instincts, and when you’re ready to plan your Colorado proposal, I’d love to help you make this exciting moment in your relationship truly unforgettable.
