So, you’ve made the bold decision to opt for a Colorado elopement over a traditional wedding. Congratulations, my fearless friend! That means your wedding day is going to be truly your own. No rigid timelines, no expectation-heavy traditions, just you, your partner, and the kind of meaningful adventure that feels authentic. Colorado offers sweeping mountains, hidden canyons, and serene lakes as the backdrop for a day that celebrates your love in a way only you could imagine.
Planning an elopement here doesn’t have to be overwhelming or stressful. From understanding permits and timelines to exploring locations that match your vision, this guide gives you the insight and inspiration to craft a day that feels intentional, stress-free, and unforgettable. Along the way, you’ll find links to other helpful resources to make each step easier, so you can focus on what matters most: being fully present and enjoying a Colorado elopement that’s completely, unapologetically you. So, let’s get into it!

Just because you’re choosing a Colorado elopement doesn’t mean you miss out on all the wedding planning fun. In fact, it’s quite the opposite! It’s just a different kind of planning—one that’s creative, flexible, and deeply personal. Instead of a checklist of traditions, you’re making intentional choices about what feels meaningful. Elopement planning is an opportunity to let your imagination run wild and create a day that truly reflects your unique journey together. That freedom is what makes elopements so fun.
I’ll admit, I’m a bit biased as a proud Colorado resident, but let me tell you, Colorado is unmatched when it comes to elopement location variety. Towering mountains, glowing red rock formations, high desert plateaus, alpine lakes, even sand dunes that feel like another planet. You can find it all here. It’s one of the few places where you can choose the landscape that feels most like you. Whether that’s a quiet forest with golden aspens in the fall or a lakeside overlook where the sunrise paints the peaks in pink light, Colorado has a backdrop that fits.
Throughout my years photographing weddings and elopements across Colorado, I’ve honed and perfected my elopement planning process with my incredible couples.
When you elope, the process looks different than a traditional wedding—but that definitely doesn’t mean you’re left on your own. Over the years, I’ve honed and perfected my approach to elopement planning, which makes the whole process feel stress-free and intentional. Here’s a quick look at what the journey ahead will include:
Once you reach out to me and we determine that we’re a perfect match, the adventure begins! We’ll dig into your vision with my Colorado Elopement Planning Questionnaire. This is where I get into the nitty-gritty of the epic vision you have. I’ll ask about the vibe and aesthetic you’re dreaming of. Are you looking for an adventure with a hint of Type II fun? Or perhaps something romantic and whimsical? The possibilities are endless, my friend, and this questionnaire might help inspire you.
Together we’ll narrow down the season, the time of day, and the kinds of landscapes you’re drawn to. Are you a night owl or an early bird? Maybe you prefer a fall elopement because of the changing aspens. Do you picture saying your vows surrounded by towering red rocks or within a serene mountain forest? From snow-capped peaks to hidden canyons, you’ve got options.
Your elopement can include as much or as little as you want, and I can even help you come up with those activities. From reading handwritten vows on a mountain ledge, to sharing a meal with a private chef, to a helicopter ride or stargazing after your ceremony, we’ll talk about the experiences that will make your wild hearts skip a beat. Dream big and let’s bring it all to life!
Once I receive your completed questionnaire, the real fun begins. Based on your answers and ideas, I’ll curate a personalized mood board that brings your vision to life visually. It helps us refine your vision and make sure all the fun details align.
From vendor recommendations to permits and timelines, I’ll guide you through every practical step so the planning doesn’t feel overwhelming. (If you’re someone who loves checklists, you might also want to peek at my month-by-month elopement planning guide for a detailed timeline.)
That’s the roadmap. Now let’s take a deeper look at some of the most exciting pieces—starting with Colorado’s dream-worthy locations.

Colorado is full of landscapes that make an elopement feel truly unforgettable. Here’s a sneak peek at some of my favorite types of locations—just a few ideas to get your creativity flowing. There are countless other spots, and part of the fun is discovering the one that feels completely yours.

If you love dramatic, sculpted landscapes, Colorado’s red rock formations will blow you away. Towering sandstone cliffs, winding canyons, and panoramic overlooks are everywhere. These locations are perfect if you want wide-open skies, bold colors, and the feeling of standing somewhere epic.
Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs is a stunning spot for an intimate elopement. Sitting on the front range just a short drive from town, it’s incredibly accessible while still being a very natural escape. The park is ADA-accessible, so everyone in your party can enjoy it comfortably.
The red rock spires and panoramic views create a dramatic backdrop that pairs beautifully with the snow-capped mountains right behind. Plus, you get the most incredible view of Pikes Peak. Summer brings vibrant greenery, while winter turns the rocks into striking contrasts against crisp white snow. No decorations are allowed, but honestly, you won’t miss them—the scenery speaks for itself.
Planning is simple, too. No permit is required for your ceremony, and being near vendors and restaurants keeps logistics easy. Summer can get very busy, so weekdays or sunrise ceremonies give you a quieter experience. This location lets you soak in Colorado’s unique natural beauty without added stress, giving your elopement a sense of effortless adventure.

You probably know Red Rocks as the legendary music venue in Morrison, Colorado, but it’s also a seriously beautiful spot for an elopement. The towering red rock formations create dramatic, jaw-dropping backdrops that make your vows feel even more monumental. The textures, colors, and sheer scale of the rocks add instant character to your day, and to your photos.
The park itself has a variety of trails and viewpoints, so you can explore and find the perfect spot for a ceremony or portraits. If you’re looking for a slightly more structured setup, the Upper Deck at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre can host receptions or small celebrations. Either way, the natural grandeur of the area pairs beautifully with Denver’s nearby amenities, giving you access to vendors, restaurants, and other conveniences without sacrificing that sense of adventure.
Whether you’re drawn by the dramatic landscape, the cultural history, or just the feeling of standing among these incredible rocks, Red Rocks Park + Amphitheatre is a choice that makes your Colorado elopement feel both epic and personal. Sunrise and sunset are especially stunning here, with the warm light turning the rocks vibrant shades of red and orange. It’s a memory you’ll never forget.
Cassie + Haley started their wedding day at Red Rocks Park, and it’s linked here for a little more inspiration.

If alpine beauty makes your heart skip a beat, Colorado’s mountains won’t disappoint. Some of the best in the whole country! From the iconic jagged peaks to quieter overlooks off the beaten path, these locations give you serene forests, sparkling lakes, and snow-capped views that make vows feel monumental. Early mornings or golden hour evenings in the mountains can be especially breathtaking.
Lost Gulch Lost Gulch sits just outside of Boulder, only about a 45-minute drive from Denver, and it’s easy to see why it’s such a sought-after spot for Colorado elopements. The views are breathtaking, with an overlook facing west that gives you sweeping panoramas of the Indian Peaks Wilderness and the distant peaks of Rocky Mountain National Park. It’s the kind of backdrop that makes every vow feel monumental.
The beauty here is year-round, but June through October usually gives the best weather for an outdoor ceremony. Winter can be stunning too, but the trails and rocks can get icy, so extra caution is needed. Because space is limited, Lost Gulch works best for ‘just us’ elopements or intimate portraits. If you’re planning a larger celebration, you can hold the ceremony at a nearby spot like an Airbnb, Sunrise Amphitheater, Halfway House, or Stone Shelter, then head to Lost Gulch for portraits before or after your vows.
Permits are required from Boulder Open Space & Mountain Parks. However, I always carry mine, so you don’t have to worry about it. Lost Gulch is one of those locations that makes an elopement feel private, a little adventurous, and completely tied to the mountains around you.

When it comes to epic spots for a Colorado elopement, it’s hard to beat Rocky Mountain National Park. Just outside Estes Park, the park offers breathtaking landscapes that make saying your vows feel incredibly epic. With 12 designated elopement locations throughout the park, you’ll have plenty of options to match the vibe you’re dreaming of.
From the quiet intimacy of a tucked-away forest to sweeping mountain vistas that stretch for miles, there’s a spot for every kind of adventure. You’ll find serene lakes, flowing rivers, and dramatic overlooks that make your photos feel like they belong in a magazine. Wildlife roams freely here, so random encounters (from a safe distance, of course) with elk, deer, or curious birds can become fun and memorable moments you’ll always remember.
For all the details on planning a micro wedding or elopement at RMNP, I’ve got a full guide covering everything you need. You can check out in my blog linked here.

Located between Keystone and Breckenridge, Sapphire Point Overlook combines panoramic views with easy access. Just a 15-minute drive from downtown Breckenridge and 1.5 hours from Denver, this spot sits at 9,500 feet and offers sweeping vistas of the Gore and Tenmile mountains, with Lake Dillon sparkling below. You could easily call this a ‘Mountains + Lakes’ location, and it’s a favorite for those who want beauty without a complicated trek. Its ADA accessibility makes it a welcoming choice for everyone in your party.
Sapphire Point Overlook accommodates up to 30 people for intimate weddings, with reservations available in three-hour increments. While it’s perfect for small gatherings, nearby trails mean other hikers may pass by, so privacy isn’t guaranteed. Reservations open at 8:00 AM MT six months in advance through recreation.gov, and the cost is $120. Popular summer and fall dates fill up quickly, so booking early is key.

If calm waters, alpine lakes, or reflective pools make your soul happy, Colorado has plenty of options for that too. Summer can bring canoe rides, lakeside picnics, or quiet boat moments, while winter turns frozen lakes into surreal, almost ethereal backdrops. Sitting by the water for a private moment or even a toast after your vows can feel surprisingly grounding and give your photos a dreamy, intimate vibe.
Nestled near Idaho Springs, CO, and conveniently close to Denver and Boulder, Saint Mary’s Glacier is a captivating elopement spot. While it does require a bit of a scenic hike, the trail itself is nothing short of breathtaking. With a round-trip of 1.5 miles, reaching the top is quite a rewarding experience.
Located about an hour from Denver, St. Mary’s Glacier offers a refreshing escape from the summer heat, as snow can be found there for most of the year. This is an important factor to consider when planning your adventure elopement. Along the way to say “I do”, you’ll also be treated to stunning views of the nearby lake and the tranquil beauty of the evergreen forest.
Ah, Maroon Bells! If you’ve ever found yourself looking up photos of Colorado elopements, chances are you’ve stumbled upon this breathtaking spot in Aspen. And let me tell you, it’s no surprise that it holds the title of being the most photographed location in the whole state. How could you resist the allure and pure magic of this place?
This is an elopement location where beauty abounds in every single season. From the vibrant colors of autumn to the glistening winter wonderland, and the blooming wildflowers of spring to the warm golden hues of summer – Maroon Bells never fails to draw you in. It’s a true paradise for couples like you, seeking a wedding “venue” that perfectly reflects their unique love story.
One thing that’s highly recommended is renting the Maroon Bells Amphitheater. By doing so, you’ll secure a dedicated private area that sets the stage for your unforgettable wedding portraits and intimate vows. It also ensures that hikers and tourists don’t accidentally stumble upon your special moments. It’s like having your own exclusive slice of this awe-inspiring landscape all to yourselves.

As Colorado’s largest lake, Grand Lake offers a picturesque setting for an adventurous elopement. At Point Park, you’ll be greeted with stunning mountain reflections on the tranquil lake, creating a great location for unforgettable photos. The option to have the dock also adds a touch of fun to your elopement experience.
What makes Point Park even more special is the opportunity to incorporate fun activities into your day of adventure. Imagine canoeing together on the mountain lake waters, adding an extra element of excitement and creating memories and a gallery that will last a lifetime.
If you’re craving something completely unexpected, Colorado’s got that covered as well. From world-famous gems to hidden spots that feel like another planet, these locations spark creativity. Whether it’s an offbeat photo session, a sunset ceremony, or stargazing under endless skies, these spots let your day feel unlike any other.
Just a short drive from Colorado Springs, The Paint Mines Interpretive Park is a place that will transport you to another world with its mesmerizing layers of pink, white, yellow, and orange. While you’ll need to have your official ceremony in a separate location, the park offers a truly remarkable backdrop for your wedding or elopement photos.
On the other side of the mines, you’ll discover a serene spot with rolling fields of tall grasses and vibrant wildflowers, creating a beautiful contrast to the geological formations. Golden hour at the Paint Mines offers the perfect lighting for capturing stunning shots. And here’s an extra tidbit for stargazers – it’s a designated Dark Sky Location, adding a touch of magic to your adventure elopement experience if you so desire.
Located in the San Luis Valley, Great Sand Dunes National Park is a truly dynamic piece of nature in Colorado that will leave you in awe. Tucked away, you might not even realize it’s there until you take that exit. If you’re seeking a totally unique elopement experience, this park is a perfect fit.
Picture giant sand dunes rising majestically amidst the Colorado mountainscape. In fact, it boasts the tallest sand dune in North America! It’s a testament to the incredible wonders that Mother Nature can create. The ever-changing environment adds an element of intrigue to this remarkable elopement location. The dune that you get married on might not be in the same spot next time you visit!
Like Paint Mines Interpretive Park, Great Sand Dunes is also a designated Dark Sky Location. As an added bonus, however, the park is open all night, making it a perfect location for those wanting to include stargazing and portraits under the night sky in their elopement day!

Embarking on an adventure elopement means embracing endless possibilities for activities and adding your own authentic flair. When you fill out my planning questionnaire, you’ll find a curated list of around 20 ideas to spark your imagination. However, let me assure you that the sky is truly the limit! You have the freedom to include any activity that resonates with you and your partner’s vision.
Whether you prefer something small and intimate or crave an extraordinary experience, we can make it happen. Imagine exchanging self-written vows, going on a breathtaking hike, stargazing under the night sky, or even cooking a special meal together. These simple yet meaningful moments add that touch of authenticity to your elopement. If you’re looking for an extra dose of adventure, how about indulging in a private helicopter tour, floating in a romantic hot air balloon, or savoring an intimate dinner prepared by a private chef? Let your wild heart lead the way, and together we’ll bring your wildest elopement dreams to life.

Once I soak up inspiration from your questionnaire and let my imagination run wild with ideas, the time comes to reveal the coveted mood board – a visual representation of your unique elopement dream. Through Zoom, or if geography permits, in person, we come together to share this pivotal moment in your elopement planning.
As we dive into the mood board, we go through every detail and gather feedback to really hone in on your vision. This is where the magic happens – where your abstract and authentic dreams take shape and form. By the end of our meeting, the general where, when, and what activities will start to crystallize.
With our shared enthusiasm and a collective stamp of approval on all that we’ve envisioned together, it’s time to take the next leap toward crafting your flawless adventure elopement.
Securing the necessary permits and licenses is absolutely crucial when planning your intimate wedding experience. Depending on the location, you may need a wedding permit, a photography permit, and/or a special use permit from the county or the park. Failing to obtain the required permits could potentially disrupt your elopement day and result in fines. Lucky for you, I actively carry photography permits for a number of Colorado locations!
It’s essential to regularly check the licensing and permit requirements as they can, and do, change. Although it may seem like a lot to navigate, as your adventure elopement photographer, I will guide you through the entire process and make sure you know what permits are required, how much they cost, and how to obtain them.

The final stretch is here, and your adventure elopement is coming to life. By this point in the elopement planning process, you’ll have your location nailed down, permits in order, and preferred vendors chosen. Although I always recommend booking as early as possible, I ask that my couples arrange all of their vendors at least 8 weeks before their wedding day. This will allow ample time to finalize arrangements, confirm reservations, and ensure a smooth and stress-free celebration.
In addition to your moodboard, I will craft a personalized timeline for your adventure elopement day. As we approach the 8-week mark, I will send you a detailed elopement timeline planning questionnaire to finalize and fine-tune all the important details. This questionnaire will help us maximize your special day by ensuring your priorities are reflected in every moment of your elopement. By planning an intentional timeline, we can create a one-of-a-kind elopement experience tailored just for you and your partner.
Once I receive your completed timeline questionnaire, I will begin crafting a draft of your personalized timeline. Additionally, we will have a final meeting to ensure all the necessary arrangements are in place, including discussing weather plans and confirming that the timeline aligns with your adventurous vision. Once everything is finalized, I will distribute the timeline to your team of lovely vendors.
From there, all you have to do is dream about your incredible adventure elopement in Colorado. Leave the logistics to me while you envision the authentic and unforgettable moments that await you on your special day.
