Airbnb and VRBO Micro Weddings and Elopements are my absolute favorite, and I can’t sing their praises enough. Not only can they be more budget-friendly than weddings at traditional venues, but they also offer a unique hominess and intimacy that a conventional venue can’t match. There’s something about having your special day in a space that feels like home—it has the incredible power to ease tension and add a level of comfort to your unforgettable celebration.
Why choose an Airbnb/VRBO for Your Micro Wedding or Elopement?

In general, the combination of accommodations and ability to host a multi-day celebration make Airbnb’s and private estates a high-value option for hosting your wedding day. However, if an Airbnb or private estate does not seem like the right fit for your wedding day, be sure to check out my other resources below:
If you want to tie the knot in a more natural and cost effective setting, I recommend exploring my blog on Colorado’s best public lands locations.
Alternatively, if you want to enjoy the privacy and amenities of a private venue, I recommend exploring my blog on Colorado’s best micro wedding venues.
While the list of reasons to host your wedding day at a VRBO or Airbnb property is extensive, one of my absolute favorites is the ability to discover a space that authentically reflects you and aligns with your wedding aesthetic. Navigating your many options allows you to find the decor and specific elements you’ve envisioned for your special day.
Every property boasts its distinctive vibe—from boho to modern and rustic to elegant. Whether you’re yearning for expansive mountain-top views, a charming lakeside cottage, or a serene desert oasis, you’re bound to find an option that aligns with the wedding atmosphere you’re seeking. When searching, you can easily customize your results by using the search filters to select special features such as a mountain cabin, a home with a ‘chef’s kitchen,’ a farm stay, or an off-the-grid retreat.
Airbnb and VRBO wedding days offer a refreshing deviation from traditional wedding day timelines. Your wedding day plans become more relaxed, allowing you to savor every moment, especially if you’ve secured your rental for a few days. With no rush to leave, you can enjoy a leisurely getaway with your loved ones or for just for you and your partner.
This extended timeline opens up a world of opportunities—from capturing intimate getting-ready moments to enchanting nighttime portraits, or from dedicating time to write a love letter to your partner to enjoying a private vow exchange. Embrace these opportunities to craft unique and photo-worthy memories that will last a lifetime.
In 2023, couples reported spending an average of $12,800 on their wedding venue. Although a luxurious vacation rental may not come cheap, it certainly does not amount to this staggering sum. When you further contemplate the decreased expense of food, beverage, and lodging because of your choice to wed at an Airbnb or VRBO, the savings become increasingly evident.
For example, at the time of this writing, one of my favorite Airbnbs houses 10 guests and rents for approximately $2,000 for a two-night stay during prime wedding months. By booking it, you can secure both your wedding venue and lodging for 10 guests for $2,000. Alternatively, if you booked a wedding venue at an average cost of $12,800 along with a 7-room hotel block at an average of $150/night, your total expense would near $15,000 for the same services.
The first step in planning your Airbnb/VRBO wedding day is to prioritize what’s important to you. Are you open to traveling further or spending more for a property that aligns with your envisioned aesthetic? Perhaps you’re dreaming of a hot tub and a sprawling deck, or maybe the property’s location itself is a priority. Do you need proximity to certain outdoor recreation, restaurants, bars, or specific events, such as a concert venue?
A perfect example of this is Sam+Ryan’s Airbnb elopement. They wanted a beautifully decorated property with stunning views, outdoor space, proximity to Golden Gate Canyon State Park, and easy access to Boulder for dinner. Fortunately, they found the ideal Airbnb with gorgeous vibrant green decor (Sam’s favorite color!), perfectly situated in their desired location. To witness the magic of Sam+Ryan’s Airbnb Elopement day, head over to my other blog post!
Another crucial consideration is whether the property can accommodate a rain plan, particularly if you have guests. It’s wise to plan ahead, determining whether you need to set up a tent or move the event indoors in case of unfavorable weather conditions. Given that weddings and elopements are often planned months or even over a year in advance, weather predictions can be uncertain, especially here in Colorado.
Once you’ve determined your ideal location and atmosphere, it’s time to kickstart wedding planning by booking your rental property. However, before reserving a vacation home as your wedding venue, make sure you take note of house rules and regulations. While VRBO provides a filter for selecting properties that allow events, unfortunately, Airbnb lacks this feature. In such cases, direct communication with your host becomes essential.
Many Airbnb rentals have specific rules, like “no events or parties” or “no commercial photography.” Hosts often do this to avoid specific situations, such as large, loud, or late-night parties, commercial film crews, or mass public exposure. However, some hosts may list such restrictions while remaining open to a “just us” elopement or intimate micro wedding. Other hosts may agree to your event with additional consideration such as a security deposit. Clear communication about your plans, the number of guests, potential vendors, and other wedding day specifics ensures that both you and your host are on the same page, alleviating stress and ensuring a smooth planning process.
After securing a rental property that will happily host your micro wedding or elopement, it’s time to gather information on your “wedding day home”! Given that touring Airbnb and VRBO properties is often not an option, it’s crucial to pay attention to the available information. Use the provided photos and reviews to guide your research, envisioning how you’d like your wedding day to unfold.
On this note, I highly recommend arriving a few days early, if possible. This allows you to familiarize yourself with the rental property, take your time setting up, and scout your favorite locations for wedding portraits. The additional time not only extends your multi-day celebration but also enables you to fully immerse yourself in the experience of marrying your partner and creating moments to cherish for a lifetime.
If you’ve chosen an Airbnb or VRBO that already aligns with your wedding aesthetic, you may have some budget flexibility to commit to enhancing your wedding day experience. You may consider incorporating after-wedding activities, luxurious catering options, or even specialty decor like custom florals, boho rugs, or vintage furniture. Exploring local event rental companies is a fantastic idea to see what unique touches they can add to elevate your micro wedding or elopement.
